SEO for Tradies: Why Melbourne Trades Businesses Keep Confusing Local SEO With Their Google Business Profile

August 05, 202611 min read

Two electricians can operate on the same street in Melbourne's west, charge similar rates, and have similar reviews. Yet one gets three times as many calls from Google as the other.

It usually isn't luck. It's that one of them has treated their Google Business Profile as their entire local SEO strategy, and the other understands it's only one piece of it.

If you've ever wondered why you're not showing up for “electrician near me” despite having a decent Google listing, or why a competitor with a worse website still outranks you, this is almost always the reason. Not a Google penalty. Not bad luck. A gap in one of three areas most trades businesses only half cover.

This post breaks down what those three areas are, where your Google Business Profile fits, where your website fits, and what you can realistically do about it without hiring a full-time marketing person. There's also a quick self-audit near the end you can run on your own business in about five minutes.

SEO vs. Paid Ads Which Strategy Wins for Local Businesses

The Questions You're Actually Asking

Before we get into the mechanics, here are the real questions, because “how does local SEO work” is rarely one of them:

● Why am I not ranking, when my work is just as good as the business above me?

● Is my website the problem, or is it my Google listing?

● Do I actually need SEO, or is my Google Business Profile enough on its own?

● Can I do this myself, or does it need a professional?

The honest answer to the first three is that it's almost never one single thing. It's usually an imbalance. Strong in one area, neglected in another, because Google is measuring several signals at once, not just one.

How Google Actually Decides Who Ranks Locally

Google doesn't publish its full local algorithm, but it does publish the three factors it says determine local rankings. According to Google's own Business Profile Help documentation, local results are mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity, and together these factors help Google find the best match for a customer's search.

Relevance is how well your business matches what someone typed. Not just that you're an electrician, but that you specifically do the thing they searched for, in the suburb they searched from.

Distance is how far your business is from the person searching, or from the suburb they typed. This is the one factor you can't optimise around. A tiler in Sunbury isn't going to appear for a Frankston search, no matter how well built the website is.

Prominence is how well-known and trusted your business appears to be. It's built mainly from reviews, but also from how consistently you're mentioned and linked to elsewhere online.

Distance is fixed. Relevance and prominence are both things you can actively build, and this is where the imbalance usually shows up. Across the trades sector, there's a recurring pattern in how these three signals get treated. Businesses obsess over collecting reviews while their service pages haven't been touched in years. Or they build a solid website and then let the Google Business Profile sit untouched. Neither wins on its own. Google rewards consistency across all three signals, not excellence in isolation.

Where Your Google Business Profile Fits

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is your strongest lever for relevance and a major lever for prominence. It's also the part most trades businesses set up once and never revisit, which matters, because Google treats an active, detailed profile very differently to a dormant one.

A few specifics that matter more than most owners realise:

● Primary and secondary categories. “Electrician” as your primary category tells Google far more than the word “electrician” appearing somewhere in your description. Add every genuinely applicable secondary category too.

● A full services list, not a single generic line. List individual services with short descriptions, things like switchboard upgrades, safety switch installation, EV charger installation, because each one is a potential match to a different search.

● Photos and posts. Recent job photos and regular posts are an underrated prominence signal. A visibly active profile reads as a business that's actually operating.

● Complete, accurate business information. Google's own guidance is that providing complete and detailed business info helps it better match your profile to relevant searches. Obvious, but incomplete profiles, missing hours, outdated service areas, are extremely common among trades businesses that haven't touched the listing since setup.

Where Your Website's Local SEO Fits

This is the part “just optimise your Google listing” advice tends to skip, and it's a real gap. A website does two things a GBP listing can't do on its own.

It gives you room to prove relevance in depth. A single GBP listing can say you service ten suburbs. A website can have a dedicated page for each one: Electrician Werribee, Electrician Point Cook, Electrician Hoppers Crossing, each genuinely different, not the same paragraph with the suburb name swapped out.

It also reinforces prominence through consistency. Your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) need to match, word for word, across your website, your GBP listing, and every directory you're listed on. Inconsistent NAP data is one of the most common, and most fixable, problems found in trades website audits generally.

Industry research backs this up directionally. The Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey, a long-running annual survey of local SEO practitioners now in its 2026 edition with 47 experts contributing, consistently finds Google Business Profile signals, review signals, and on-page website signals are the three heaviest weighted categories in local pack rankings, with review signals having grown in relative importance over recent editions. Different secondary write-ups of that survey report slightly different exact percentages, so it's worth treating the ranking of what matters as solid and treating any single precise percentage you see quoted online with a bit of caution.

How Many Suburb Pages Should You Actually Build?

This deserves its own answer, because it's where trades businesses most often overcorrect in one direction or the other.

Too few, and you end up with one generic “areas we service” page listing fifteen suburbs. That gives Google almost nothing to match against a specific local search.

Too many, done badly, and you end up with fifteen separate suburb pages that are all the same 200 words with the suburb name swapped. That risks reading as duplicate content and rarely helps.

A more realistic approach is to start with the three to five suburbs that generate the most work for you, and give each one genuine content. Mention specific streets or landmarks if relevant, reference the kind of jobs you've done in that area, and vary the structure page to page. Only expand to more suburbs once those core pages are actually pulling traffic. A suburb page is worth creating when you can write something specific to that area. If every page would say the same thing, that's a sign to combine them rather than split them.

The Factor Most Trades Businesses Ignore: Reviews

Reviews sit under “prominence,” but they deserve their own section because they're the most controllable ranking factor a trades business has. You generate a new opportunity for one every time a job finishes.

Volume and recency both matter. A profile with sixty reviews from three years ago reads very differently to Google, and to a customer, than one with sixty reviews, ten of them from the past month. Review signals have grown in weight across recent Whitespark survey editions, which tracks with a broader shift toward Google rewarding ongoing engagement over a static, one-time-built profile.

The fix isn't complicated, but it does need a system rather than a one-off request. The businesses that consistently generate reviews tend to ask at the exact moment the job finishes, ideally with a direct link sent by text, rather than relying on the customer to remember later. This is also one of the easiest things to automate. A simple trigger sent from your invoicing or job-management software the moment a job is marked complete removes the “remembering to ask” problem entirely.

A Hypothetical Example (Not a Real Client Case)

To make this concrete, and to be clear, this is an illustrative scenario, not a real audit, imagine a plumbing business with well over a hundred genuine Google reviews, well above most of its competitors. On paper, prominence looks strong. But the website has a single generic “plumbing services” page, no suburb-specific content, and hasn't been updated in two years.

In this scenario, the business would likely still rank reasonably well in its home suburb, where distance and prominence carry it. But it would probably disappear in neighbouring suburbs, where a competitor with weaker reviews but genuine suburb-specific service pages outranks it on relevance. The fix wouldn't be more reviews. It would be building out the relevance signal that's actually missing.

That's the pattern worth remembering. Whichever signal you're strongest in can only carry you so far if the other two are neglected.

What Doesn't Work

A few shortcuts that tend to cause more harm than benefit:

● Stuffing suburb names into every page and heading. Reads as spam to both Google and customers.

● Buying or incentivising fake reviews. Risks profile suspension, and increasingly detectable by Google's review systems.

● Creating many near-identical suburb pages. Thin, duplicate content rarely outranks fewer, genuinely differentiated pages.

● Keyword-stuffing the GBP business name field. Against Google's guidelines and can trigger a suspension.

● Ignoring mobile page speed. Most local searches happen on mobile, so a slow-loading site undermines every other signal you've built.

● Setting and forgetting. A profile or website that hasn't changed in two years signals inactivity, not stability.

How Healthy Is Your Local SEO? A Quick Self-Audit

Score yourself honestly against each line.

0 to 3 “Yes”: foundational gaps. Start with the monthly action plan below.

4 to 6 “Yes”: competitive, but likely uneven across the three signal categories.

7 “Yes”: a strong local foundation. Focus shifts to expansion, more suburbs, more backlinks, rather than fixing basics.

A Simple Monthly Action Plan

This is realistically achievable in under an hour a month once the initial setup is done.

Week 1: Complete or refresh every field in your Google Business Profile.

Week 2: Check NAP consistency across your website and one directory listing (rotate through directories across the year).

Week 3: Add or update one suburb-specific service page.

Week 4: Follow up for reviews on every job completed that month, ideally via an automated text link.

Ongoing: Add a GBP post or fresh project photo roughly weekly, and respond to every new review, positive or negative.

Frequently asked questions

NDIS providers are usually talking to several audiences at once, and one platform cannot do all of that work equally well.

Is Google Business Profile the same as local SEO?
No. GBP is one input into local SEO, not a substitute for it. Local SEO also includes your website's on-page content, technical setup, and off-site signals like directory listings and backlinks.

How long does local SEO take to show results for a trades business?
Timelines vary by competition in your service area, but most improvements, particularly GBP changes, take several weeks to a few months to show a measurable shift, since Google needs to observe consistent signals over time.

Do I need a website if I already have a strong Google Business Profile?
Yes. A website provides the depth of relevance signals, suburb-specific pages, detailed service content, that a single GBP listing can't hold on its own.

Can I rank without reviews?
It's harder, not impossible. Reviews are one of three main signal categories. Strong relevance and prominence elsewhere can partly offset a thin review profile, but not indefinitely.

How many suburb pages should I create?
Start with your three to five highest-value service suburbs and give each genuine, differentiated content, rather than creating many thin pages at once.

How often should I update my Google Business Profile?
Aim for at least weekly activity, a photo, a post, or a review response, rather than treating it as a one-time setup.

Is local SEO better than Google Ads?
They serve different purposes. Google Ads buys immediate visibility, local SEO builds compounding, ongoing visibility. Most trades businesses benefit from both at different stages.

Do online directory citations still matter?
Yes. Consistent NAP details across directories remain part of how Google verifies your business is real, active, and accurately located.

What is schema markup, and do I need it?
Schema is structured code added to your website that explicitly tells Google what kind of business you are, your service area, and other details. It supports relevance signals but isn't a substitute for genuine on-page content.

Conclusion

Local SEO isn't about chasing Google's algorithm. It's about making it easier for Google to trust your business. Every review, suburb page, completed profile field, project photo, and satisfied customer becomes another piece of evidence. Businesses that consistently build those signals across all three areas, relevance, distance, and prominence, tend to outperform businesses chasing a shortcut in just one.

If you want a clear picture of where your business currently stands against these signals, book a strategy conversation and we'll show you exactly what's helping and what's holding you back.

Common questions.

How long does onboarding take?

Most clients are live with their first campaigns or content shipping within 14 days. Our onboarding sprint covers stakeholder kickoff, audit, channel access, attribution setup, and a 90-day plan all before week three.

Do you work with small businesses or only enterprises?

Both. We partner with funded scale-ups, mid-market operators, and ASX-listed brands. Our minimum engagement is calibrated so we can do real work, not a token retainer.

What does a typical engagement look like?

A dedicated senior strategist, a pod of channel specialists, weekly working sessions, and a live revenue dashboard. We work in 90-day cycles with quarterly business reviews against the targets you set with us.

How do you report on campaign performance?

Real-time Looker dashboards tied to your CRM and ad platforms, plus a monthly executive summary. We report on revenue, pipeline, CAC, payback, and contribution margin, not impressions.

Do you require long-term contracts?

No lock-ins. Standard engagements are month-to-month after an initial 90-day setup. We earn the renewal each cycle. That pressure keeps us sharp.

Which industries do you specialise in?

Healthcare, real estate, eCommerce, trades & construction, professional services, education, NDIS, and hospitality. Each vertical has its own playbook, regulatory knowledge, and benchmark library.

Ready to scale unreasonably fast?

Most Melbourne businesses are leaving revenue on the table not because they're not investing in marketing, but because their funnel has gaps no one's looked at closely enough. Book a free 30-minute audit with our team. We'll show you exactly where the opportunities are, and what's worth fixing first. No pitch. No obligation.
